What is Clarithromycin for:
This medication is a macrolide antibiotic, prescribed infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and skin infections. It stops the growth of sensitive bacteria.

How should Clarithromycin be used:
Take Clarithromycin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Take Clarithromycin at regular intervals as instructed. Take it at the same time each day. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you dont, the infection will not clear completely. If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole with plenty of water. You may take them with or without food. If you have been given extended-release tablets, take them together with food or immediately after a meal. Swallow them whole, do not cut, chew or crush these extended-release tablets. If you have been given an oral suspension, shake it well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose. You may take it with or without food.

Common side effects of Clarithromycin :
Long-acting tablet shell in the stool. Belly pain. Bad taste in your mouth. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies.

What do I do if I miss a dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. – If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. – Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

What precautions should I take when taking Clarithromycin :
Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (breathlessness, rashes, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as azithromycin, erythromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics.

When do I need to seek medical help
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. – Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. A fast heartbeat. Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. Very bad belly pain. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Clarithromycin with other medicines:
Do not take Clarithromycin with terfenadine, cisapride, pimozide, astemizole and colchicine — alert your doctor immediately if you are taking any of these medicines. Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: – heart and blood pressure medicines, especially digoxin, verapamil, felodipine, quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone. – migraine medicines such as ergotamine and eletriptan. – warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine). – lovastatin and other similar cholesterol medicines. – mood medicines such as midazolam, triazolam. – rifabutin and other similar TB medicines. – epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin and carbamazepine. – antifungals such as fluconazole, itraconazole and ketoconazole – other medicines such as ciclosporin, tacrolimus, sildenafil and similar medicines. Clarithromycin may also interact with many other medicines that are not listed here. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
